Centrally located on the Eastern Shore, Virginia is the center of our nations history. America began here, with the first English settlement at Jamestown in the early seventeenth century. Colonial life of the 1700’s included a large role for a bustling town called Williamsburg. Virginians fought in the American Revolution. By the time of the Civil War Richmond had become a major city.

Virginia is rich in history and the perfect locale for rest and relaxation. Famous for lush golf courses, hunting and abundant fishing holes, Virginia is a sportsman’s paradise. Offering battlefields, museums and restored homes and villages from a different time, Virginia is a history buffs dream come true. Boasting malls, factory outlets, antique shops by the hundreds, and specialty shops innumerable, Virginia is a shopper’s delight. Water parks, amusement parks, as well as State & National Parks make Virginia ideal for the kid in all of us. From beach-combers to mountain climbers, Virginia has a little something for everyone.

Outdoor Recreation

Fishing is a popular Virginia pastime. With lakes, streams, ponds, rivers and the Chesapeake Bay nearby, there is no shortage of fishing holes. A resident fishing license may be purchased at Wal-Mart, K-Mart and some fishing supply stores for $12.50. A five day nonresident license sells for $6.50. Call (804)367-1000 for more information. Hunting is an American tradition and that tradition lives on in Virginia. Virginians hunt big mammals such as bear and deer to smaller animals like rabbits and squirrels. The Hopewell Area

A small yet historic city, Hopewell serves as a gateway to plantation country. It’s strategic location was of great importance in many battles and critical to the Union forces late in the Civil War. Hopewell is nearby to Richmond, Petersburg, and Williamsburg, allowing for quick and convenient access to the many sites and attractions that they have to offer.

Army Women's Museum

This area was settled in 1613 by Sir Thomas Dale and later charted in 1826, becoming one of the commonwealth’s earliest incorporated towns. City Point was annexed by the City of Hopewell in 1923, completing the history of the town. Brochures available for self-guided walking or driving tours.

Petersburg National Battlefield

The site where the Union’s 122,000 troops under General Ulysses S. Grant engaged the Confederacy’s 65,000 troops in a battle which endured for a month and evolved into a ten-month Union siege of the City of Petersburg, culminating with General Lee’s retreat and eventual surrender at the Appomattox Courthouse.

Sherwood Forest Plantation

This plantation was built on 1600 acres in 1730. It survived the Civil War, but bares the scars incurred during that battle. The house is said to house a 200 year old ghost known as the Gray Lady. This historic landmark theater was built in the 1920’s and has been completely restored to it’s original condition. Marvel at it’s enormous chandelier, or the ornate items which adorn the walls. The furnishings and the staff dressed in clothing of the period, you’ll feel as though you’ve stepped back in time. Today the Byrd shows first run films with the price of admission always just 99¢ matinees or for $1.99 evening. Have a seat in the 500 seat balcony. If you decide to see a movie at the Byrd you’ll want to arrive early to gaze at your surroundings.

Set in the beautifully landscaped Capitol Square, and designed by Thomas Jefferson, the Capitol is an architectural treat and greatly resembles the nations Capitol. The Capitol contains a Houdon statue of George Washington. Also see the governor’s mansion located right next to the Capitol. This 1813 structure is the oldest continuously used governor’s mansion in the country. There is no charge to tour these buildings.
* The capitol is undergoing restoration from spring 2004 to winter 2006. Free guided tours of the capitol will continue until the end of February 2005. Walking tours of the grounds will be offered from the guide staff during closings.
Hours: Capitol tours are open Monday-Friday 9am-5pm, Saturday 10am-4pm and Sunday 1pm-4pm. Governor’s mansion is only open to the public Tuesday-Thursday mornings.

The Richmond International Raceway is an 800 acre facility and has 6 buildings and 300,00 square feet of exhibitor and meeting space. In the shadow of Richmond’s financial district near the James River lies a neighborhood of cobblestone streets and alleyways called Shockoe Slip. Having served as a trading post in the 1600’s and as the commercial center of Richmond during the civil war, today it stands as a shining example of urban restoration. Unique gift shops, clothing stores and galleries for fine art, crafts, and antiques are all nestled in this quaint setting. Continue down the cobblestone street and you’ll find yourself in Shockoe Bottom, home to restaurants and night life galore. Getting Around Richmond

The following directions are based on the assumption that your trip will originate in the Chester area , at the AmeriSuites or Howard Johnson’s Hotels, which are highly recommended for our attendees of our seminars held in Hopewell.

Getting to Midlothian Turnpike
Start on Ironbridge Rd(rt.10) towards Chester & I-95.Take I-95 north to exit 67 Chippenham Parkway (Route 150) north. Follow Chippenham until you see two exits for Midlothian Turnpike (Route 60). The second exit is for west bound traffic.
Distance: 24miles
Time: 28 minutes [Map]

Getting to Broad Street Road
Take I-95 north to Chippenham Parkway (Route 150) north. Follow Chippenham until you see the exit for Powhite Parkway (Route 76). Take this exit and follow through the tollbooth. After crossing the Powhite Bridge over the James River you will come to a split in the road, go to the left and you will be on the Downtown Expressway, I-195 north. After a few miles you will see an exit for Broad, Clay, and Roseneath Streets. Take this exit and you will be on Clay Street. Turn right at the first street you come to, onto Roseneath Street. At the stoplight you have to turn right onto West Broad Street Road.

Another way would be to take I-95 north to I-64 [I-95].Take exit 79 onto I-64 towards Powhite Pkwy/Charlottesville. Take a right onto exit 178A towards US-250/Short Pump. Take right (west) onto US-250 [West Broad Street].

Getting Dowtown
Take I-95 north to exit 74-C. This will put you onto 17th Street. Go to the first stoplight and you will be at East Broad Street Road. This is the Shockoe Bottom area and Shockoe Slip is just a few minutes away.

Getting to Kings Dominion

Tour the actual site of the Jamestown settlement, where America really began and see the museum, ruins of actual buildings, glass house and the 1639 church tower. If you choose, you may tour a recreation of Jamestown which features three replicated ships, palisade fort and an Indian village. 2007 marks the 400th anniversary of America's first permanent English colony. In 2006 a new "immersion experience" visitors center will be opening along with an archaearium, which will display archaeology exhibits. By 2007 the visitors services and gallery complex will be completed. Then the visitors can begin their experience in a new 45-foot-high rotundra with a 250-seat theater and a second floor exhibit gallery.

One of the modern-day seven wonders. This bridge cost $200 million and took 3½ years to build and has two mile-long tunnels. At a total length of more than seventeen miles, it is actually impossible to see land from some points of the bridge. There are opportunities to dine, shop, fish, and just take in the sights. Aside from the leisure it provides, the bridge saves 90 minutes and 95 miles between Virginia Beach and the Northern Neck.
